Oakland Mills is located due east of Town Center and across US Route 29. The neighborhoods in the village of Oakland Mills are broken down into Steven's Forest, Talbott Springs, and Thunder Hill and the properties are made up of medium sized to small single-family homes and apartment complexes including Verona at Oakland Mills.
What else will you find at Oakland Mills? You will enjoy the Howard County Farmers Market, the Meeting House (also known as the Oakland Mills Interfaith Center), the highly rated Oakland Mills High School, and a variety of performances at the circa 1790 Cooper’s House venue. Most of the homes in Oakland Mills were built between 1970 and 1994, but a few residences date back to 1940 to 1969.
Oakland Mills was named for an old mill in the area and in keeping with Columbia tradition the streets of Steven’s Forest, Talbott Springs, and Thunder Hill take their names from Americans famous for their creative achievements. Steven’s Forest’s street names come from the works of John Dos Passos, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway. Talbott Springs’ names are taken from the works of Carl Sandburg and Ralph Waldo Emerson. And finally the street names of Thunder Hill are affectionately lifted from the works of Andrew Wyeth.
The Columbia Ice Rink, administered by the Columbia Association, is part of the Oakland Mills village center. The village center also contains a grocery store and other retail establishments and all the neighborhoods of Oakland Mills have their own outdoor pool. Along with Oakland Mills High School (attended by students who reside in Oakland Mills and Owen Brown), there are three elementary schools and one middle school. The community center of Oakland Mills is the newly renovated Other Barn, available for special events in its charming interior or flower filled courtyard.
