Within the planned community of Columbia there are ten villages and at the southernmost end you will find the lovely village of Kings Contrivance, home to approximately 11,000 residents. First occupied in 1977, Kings Contrivance is made up of apartment complexes and housing developments. Its unusual name comes from a well known area restaurant of the same name that was named for the childhood home of Howard County Circuit Court Judge James Macgill.
Properties in Kings Contrivance are priced in the midrange for Columbia and prospective residents have their choice of three neighborhoods within the village: Huntington, Macgill’s Common, and Dickinson. The whimsical street names come from American poetry and folksongs. Beautiful parks in and around Kings Contrivance include Gorman Park, Huntington Neighborhood Park, and Savage Park. There are many trails throughout the village as well, giving easy access to the parks and Columbia’s extensive biking/hiking trail system.
The first village board of Kings Contrivance was elected in April of 1978 to oversee the activities of the community association. This association is a non-profit corporation that supports a range of services for the residents of Kings Contrivance including the community pool. Funds paid by residents to the Columbia Association each year go to the running of their village. A village manager is hired by the board to ensure Kings Contrivance is maintained seamlessly.
Like all Columbia villages, Kings Contrivance has its own “village center”, which is a conveniently located shopping center for residents to obtain their basic necessities. There is also the Amherst House, located in the Dickinson neighborhood, which is the community center and home base of the community association. Activities at Amherst House include exercise classes, toddler classes, workshops, seminars, and special events. Throughout the year you may find group yard sales, pool parties, holiday events for the whole family, a village flea market, community clean-up projects, and bingo nights.
